Moving the Bell

Tower could no longer bear weight. Moved to position by Wessex Block. See Robin Whicker's article in Canfordian 1991/2 (which says it was moved in 1988, but this is wrong. According to former Bursar, John Masterman, it was more likely to be 1983 )

Clarence School CCF

EL00569

The buildings are in 8 - 10 Clarence Road Weston - they are (or were last time I saw them) still standing and appeared to be converted into apartments. Have now found a few notes I made at the time. The school was first established as Combe Down School at Bath in 1886 but moved to Weston in 1895. It remained there until some time in the 1920's when it moved to Canford in Dorset. The Cadet Corps, seen here in the early Great War period was commanded by Capt. J. C. Macnutt. He was brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War for the high state of efficiency to which he trained the Corps. His rank insignia of Captain is worn on the cuffs of his uniform tunic. This style was worn by Army officers from pre war until c.1915/16 - officers serving on the Western Front were easily distinguished at a distance and so bacame favoured targets for the German. The insignia was moved to the shoulder and has been there ever since..(nowadays only on dress uniforms) The rifles the boys are carrying are museum pieces - the long ones are Lee Metfords as used in the Boer War and the ones in the rear platoon of younger boys appear to be cavalry carbines - ..44 "Martini Henry side loading. That's about all I can see even though my original is larger than the copy I sent you. Both the officer and all the Cadets are wearing Somerset Light Infantry cap badges. For interest I attach the shoulder insignia worn by Somerset Army Cadets during the later war years through until the late 1970,s. (Richard Cornish)
