The Madrigal Choir

EL00979

with Michael James in the background Slides donated for scanning by Beverley Manning who writes: "Music on the River" used to be one of my favourite events of the year. We had fanfares from the Organ loft stairs, Brass over the gatehouse, Madrigals from punts in the river, the Wind Band over on the island and poetry from the bank. I could never understand why none of my successors ever continued this event - it was very popular. For all that, I think that this photo was not of Music on the River, but was taken on the following speech day on 10 July 1976. In the background is a rare photo of the late Michael James who died at the age of 30 just as he was to become Sub-organist of Rochester Cathedral. The Canfordians (with a little help from Ben Thompson) are: Christine Alford (now Perkin, wife of Rev Paul Perkin, former Canford Master), possibly Amanda Hubbard, Kathy Pearce,( now Torlot and a School Governor), Jennifer Russell (who now works, I think, at Abbey Road), Ben Thompson, don't know next female (but I think that might be Amanda Hubbard), Jeremy Robson, Nicky ???, Paul Munden hiding behind Robert Casalis de Pury.
