Clarke (B33) D Mirror on suicide

PUP-GEN-1930-005E

Clarke killed himself by swallowing arsenic pd sent by Richard Evans, who was writing a biography of Sir Basil Clarke, Ian Clarke's father. Evans email: I am writing a biography of Sir Basil Clarke, the First World War correspondent and leading figure in the early British public relations industry, and I was hoping you may be able to help me. Sir Basil's son, Ian Clarke, was a pupil at Canford and sadly died there on December 4, 1933. He had been suffering from depression and swallowed arsenic immediately following a visit from Sir Basil, who at the inquest expressed his gratitude to Ian's housemaster for his "unfailing kindness" to Ian. I have attached a PDF of an article about Ian's death from the Daily Mirror, though it was also covered by The Times and the Manchester Guardian. I was wondering whether your archives may include some record of Sir Basil's correspondence with the school following the tragedy, such as whether there was any memorial fund in Ian's memory. I also thought it may be that some of Sir Basil's other children - he had six other children, including five boys - may have attended Canford. Any help you would be able to give me would be most appreciated as I know little about the effect of Ian's death on Sir Basil. You can find out more about my biography of him on the Guardian website - http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/greenslade/2011/may/20/marketingandpr-theguardian If you need any more information, do not hesitate to email me back or call me on 07789 760094. Kind regards Richard Evans
