In 1998, the first - The Canford Festival took place. It was organised by John James, as part of the Candford’s 75th anniversary celebrations, taking place from 15th to 21st October 1998. Various events took place hosted by the school from talks to workshops. Notably, the life of Sir Josseph Rotblat, physicist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, represented an intriguing case in point: following his work on the nuclear bomb in the Second World War, he resigned from this area of research on perceiving its potentially lethal consequences. There was also a captivating speaker, novelist Helen Dunmore, as well as the African dance company Adzido running dance and drumming workshops for fifty pupils.
Today it continues and it is now called, The Festival of Idea’s. It took place recently on 17th & 18th October 2024, where the school gathered to explore the fascinating interplay between stability and instability across a wide array of disciplines. Throughout the festival, there was a remarkable range of speakers including, author Damien Lewis. There was also a professional sports panel discussion of talented members of our community, to discuss their experiences as professional sports people. The panel included Owen Parkin, former English cricketer and Ellie Gibbson, a professional netball player.
