South America Trip 1992

In July 1992, 16 Canford pupils set off for five weeks trekking in South America.

With a group of 14 boys and 2 girls, the trip was designed to let the team members do the organising and running of the expedition, with minimal input from the adult leaders. Pupils left Canford on Saturday 4th July, flying from Heathrow, to Caracas in Venezuela, where they stayed for two nights, before flying onto Quito, Ecuador. The group stayed a further two nights in Quito then travelled down the Pan American Highway by bus to the jungle town of Puerto Mishualli, which was the start point of the first phase of their trek, where they canoed 150 kilometres across five days down the Rio Napo towards the Amazon.

The next phase of the trek took them to a small mountain village, where they were to walk for four days along an old Inca road, amongst the Ecuador highlands. They then moved onto Cuenca where they stayed for 48 hours, before walking for two days in the mountains. They then travelled to the slopes of Mount Chimborazo in the back of a cattle wagon, after a two hour drive through volcanic desert.

Their last week was spent in Quito, where they finally got chance to do some much needed relaxing and sightseeing.
