"The annual trip for GCSE History students from Canford to First and Second World War Battlefields in Belgium and France took place between 28th and 31st August. The trip was the perfect introduction to the Western Front, on which their GCSE Coursework is focused.
The 39 students on the trip visited numerous battle sites on the Ypres salient, including the 'In Flanders Fields' Museum in the Cloth Hall, Sanctuary Wood Trench Museum, Tyne Cot cemetery and the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate.They also visited the Somme battlefield, including Newfoundland Memorial Park, the new Visitor Centre at Thiepval, Lochnagar Crater and Delville Wood.
The final leg of the trip gave the students the opportunity to visit sites in Normandy associated with D-Day, including the Pegasus Bridge Museum, the 360 degree Cinemaat Arromanches, the German coastal defence battery at Longues and the famous American Cemetery at Colleville overlooking Omaha Beach.
