Although our first season at Canford has not been marked by any particular success, it has nevertheless been most enjoyable in every way. We did not have very many fixtures, but the matches were all really good, and we had some very close finishes. One great disappointment was the cancelling of our all-day fixture with the Buffs, which was to have taken place at Portland on July 22nd, but this was fortunately the only match cancelled. " Mountjoy " has proved a splendid ground, and it is a great pity that the wicket was neglected for so long before we came here. The weather, too, has favoured us; and some highscores have been made, Mr. Robothan making 112 in one of the practice matches, and since that both Jefferies and Page have topped the century.
The season's results are :—
Played 6, won 2, lost 4, drawn 0.
BOURNEMOUTH SPORTS CLUB. (Home). WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13TH.
We opened our first season at Canford with a remarkably level match against the Bournemouth Sports Club. We lost only by the narrow margin of four runs, and but for the splendid innings of the visiting captain, the result might have been very different.
We batted first, but our innings opened disastrously, for our captain was clean bowled in the first over, and Foley and Crinks, followed by Andrew, were dismissed before " twenty up."O'Brien then joined Jefferies, and both batted steadily, gradually mastering the bowling, and taking our total to 56 before the former was bowled. The rest of our side were soon disposed of,however, with the exception of Fosbery who hit up a useful 24. Jefferies was unfortunate to be caught at mid-on when only six runs short of his fifty.
Our visitors now went in, but their first few men met with little success, and before the tea interval they had lost three wickets for ten runs. After tea, however, Pettitt and Turner made runs rapidly, and their total stood at 34 when Darvell bowled the former. Curtis now joined Turner, and these two had put on another 34 when Darvell dismissed Curtis and O. James with successive balls. Their seventh wicket fell at 85,and Cliff was bowled two runs later.Turner, however, was still in, and batting well, and F. James stayed with him until he made the winning hit—a four, which brought his own score to a well-earned 50.
