In May 1993, Canford School hosted a charity family fun day, opening its grounds to the public for a day-long country fair style show. Staff and pupils helped host and run the event which included jousting, helicopter rides, falconry, balloon ascents, music. The event was sponsored by a number of businesses who supplied materials and prizes, or funded events and stalls throughout the day.
"After much hard work by Mr. Mike Owen, Canford opened its gates wide to the public on Saturday 29th May, and much fun was had by all. The aim was to raise money for the MacMillan Cancer Care Appeal, and over £13,000 was handed over by the Headmaster to Mrs Felicity Irwin J.P. at the next School Assembly.”
The money raised at this event helped fund the building of the new ‘Forest Holme Cancer Care Unit’ at Poole General Hospital, which opened in April 1994.
